The Benchmark indices erased most of the intraday losses but ended lower in the volatile session on July 28. Among sectors, metal index added over 1 percent and IT index rose 0.2 percent, however, selling was seen in the auto, bank, energy and pharma sectors.
On the global front, European stocks were moving higher in cautious trade on Wednesday, as a slew of upbeat earnings updates outweighed renewed concerns about Beijing's regulatory crackdown on tech and education companies.
Gold prices held steady near the key $1,800-per-ounce level on Wednesday as investors held back from making large bets ahead of a U.S. Federal Reserve policy decision due later in the day.
On the other side Indian rupee ended higher by 9 paise at 74.37 per dollar, amid selling saw in the domestic equity market. While Oil prices rose about 1 percent towards $75 a barrel on Wednesday after industry data showed U.S. crude and product inventories fell more sharply than expected last week.
On the corporate front, BLS International Services share price touched a 52-week high of Rs 157.45, gaining 15 percent on July 28 after company posted profit for the quarter ended June 2021. Whereas Mahindra Lifespace advances over 4%, hits 52-week high as Board approves bonus issue plan.
Meanwhile, shares of Century Textiles and Industries moved higher by 15 per cent to Rs 783.80, also its record high on the BSE in intra-day trade on Wednesday after the company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 25 crore for the quarter ended June 2021.
The 30-share benchmark ended at 52443.71 down by -135.05 points or by -0.26 % and then NSE Nifty was at 15709.4 down by -37.05 points or by -0.24 %.
During the day’s trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 52673.69 and intraday low of 51802.73 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 15767.5 and intraday low of 15513.45.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 567.90,+5.08%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 1365.15,+2.60%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 992.30,+1.71%), Bajaj Finserv Ltd. (Rs. 13985.70,+1.34%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 685.30,+1.13%), among others.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1653.20,-2.64%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 4730.20,-2.36%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 728.45,-2.27%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 228.05,-1.74%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 116.70,-1.73%), among others.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3575 , shares advanced were 1520 while 1899 shares declined and 156 were unchanged.
